Almost everyone will experience back pain at some point in their life, varying from mild to severe, and it can be short-lived or long-lasting. Understanding the root cause of back pain and by following a “healthy back” routine will, in most cases, reduce or prevent back pain.
Back pain is something we treat every day so we have a great deal of experience helping our patients get rid of their pain and regaining normal function. Added to this, your Physiotherapist will help strengthen and mobilise your back to reduce the risk of further episodes of back pain.
There are many causes of back pain, so being able to accurately diagnose the cause is really important to ensure you are given the correct advice and treatment. Your Physiotherapist will carry out a detailed assessment and discuss their findings and treatment with you.
There are a few things you can do to help manage your back pain until you can see a Physiotherapist:
- Regular warm/hot showers are best during which you can move gently
- Avoid using ice or having a bath, as this will make you stiffer
- Keep moving as much as you are able within your pan tolerance
- Short slow walks are the best exercise when you have back pain
- Swimming can be ok or most causes of back pain
- With mild back pain a cross trainer can help keep you back loose
- Limit sitting during an episode of back pain
